Twinning of Cities

This is a Local Authority Diplomatic Network aimed at creating and strengthening partnership by citizens of different cities.

It is aimed at increasing co-operation at the City level with a view of promoting and stimulating trade and economic developments, institutional capacity building, infrastructure developments, solid waste management practices, social and cultural exchanges which posses rich heritages.

1. Seattle – Washington DC
Seattle Sister Cities Association Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mombasa City was signed on 13th July 2011.

Renovation of Utange Dispensary, establishment of Dental and Maternity Unit has already been carried out under this arrangement.  

2. Longbeach – California
Longbeach Sister Cities Association Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mombasa City was signed on 20th November 2007, followed by a visit by Longbeach on 30th November 2008, a visit by Mombasa City on 19th February 2009.

Sister Cities International (SCI) under Africa Urban Poverty Alleviation Program has done the following:
·      Setup Ganjoni CDC
·      Water purifying machines in Mvita (water plant)
·      Donated books to National Library – Mombasa
·      Consolidated partnership initiated by Los Angeles at Mombasa Polytechnic and Kenyatta Universities.
·      Donated Garbage Trucks and Fire Engine
·      Medical facilities to arrive soon (under Project Care)



3. Ethekwini Municipal – Durban, South Africa

Mombasa visited Durban on 23rd September 2011 and a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed on 20th February 2012.
